Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve recognised the toll put on  my body over the years. In a quest to distract myself from emotional pain, I willingly introduced numerous toxins, unaware of the unnecessary pressure I was putting on my body.

Have you, too, found yourself consuming things that deep down you know aren’t serving your well-being?

Throughout my exploration, I’ve gathered profound insights into the incredible resilience of the human body. I’m eager to share this wisdom with you—simple yet powerful tips that can support your body’s natural healing abilities.

Your commitment to this 7-week detox is more than a choice; it’s an act of kindness towards your entire being. It’s an acknowledgment that your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being are interconnected, and your active participation in this journey is a catalyst for healing.

Our bodies can be adversely impacted by the intake of harmful substances like industrial trans fats , refined sugar, artificial additives, and preservatives. These substances can trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, and a host of health issues, posing risks to vital organs, cardiovascular systems, and overall health.

Let’s dive in!

WEEK 2: Gastrointestinal Tract

The Physical Stuff

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the body from toxins through a sophisticated defence mechanism. The journey begins in the stomach, where its acidic environment acts as a barrier, breaking down and neutralising potential toxins in food and drink. The process continues in the small intestine, where enzymatic activity breaks down substances further and facilitates the absorption of essential nutrients.

Optimal gastrointestinal function relies on several factors, including a varied and balanced diet, proper hydration, and a thriving gut microbiome. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiota is particularly important, as these beneficial bacteria play a significant role in detoxification and overall health. By making informed choices around nutrition and lifestyle, you can support your GI tract in reducing toxin load and promoting well-being.

The stomach’s acidic lining not only helps neutralise harmful substances but also supports the production and absorption of essential micronutrients in the small intestine. These micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, are vital for energy, mood regulation, and a wide array of physiological functions. Together, they enhance your sense of vitality and overall health.

The Seat of Emotions

The gut is often referred to as the “second brain” because of its profound influence on emotional well-being. It contains a complex network of neurons that communicate directly with the brain, forming what is known as the gut-brain axis. This bi-directional connection explains why emotions such as stress, anxiety, or joy often manifest physically in the stomach. A healthy gut not only supports digestion but also plays a critical role in regulating mood and emotional balance, solidifying its place as the true seat of emotions.

The Greeks and Their Perception

The ancient Greeks understood the gut’s central role in health and well-being. Hippocrates, often regarded as the father of modern medicine, famously stated, “All disease begins in the gut.” They saw digestion and gut balance as foundational to vitality, temperament, and even the soul itself. Their holistic perspective linked physical health with mental and emotional states, emphasising the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit.

The Neurons in the Gut and Their Brain Interconnections

The gut contains over 100 million neurons, collectively referred to as the enteric nervous system, which operates independently while remaining deeply interconnected with the brain. This gut-brain axis communicates via the vagus nerve, sending signals that influence mood, stress levels, and cognitive functions such as decision-making. Remarkably, approximately 90% of the body’s serotonin—a neurotransmitter critical for happiness and well-being—is produced in the gut. This intricate relationship highlights the gut’s essential role in both mental and physical health.

Meditate first then check your morning emails.

ACTIONS FOR CHANGE!

  1. When to Drink Water:
Leave at least 30 minutes before eating and avoid drinking for 30 minutes after eating. This supports the mucus lining and stomach acid to function optimally during digestion.
  2. Prepare Food in Advance:
Plan and prepare meals ahead of time, especially when you have a busy schedule.
  3. Write a Healthy Shopping List:
Create your list right after a wholesome meal, when you’re full and less likely to be tempted by unhealthy options. Stick to your list at the supermarket, avoiding distractions like colorful packaging and ads.
  4. Avoid Comfort Food Aisles:
Stay away from the aisles where your go-to comfort foods are displayed to minimize temptation.

Emotional Wellbeing Extras!

  1. Feel Your Gut:
Every morning, pause and place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Notice the sensations and movements in your body. If your mind drifts toward logical thoughts or memories, gently bring your focus back to your breath and bodily sensations.
  2. Practice Gratitude:
After tuning into your body, sit up in bed and write down five things you’re grateful for. Shifting your focus to gratitude can help set a positive tone for the day.

Change any habitual walks into certain aisles.
