The detoxing power:

Nasal Passage and Nose

Nasal detox is a powerful way to improve breathing, reduce sinus issues, and promote overall health, this guide walks you through effective techniques for a cleaner, healthier respiratory system.

A powerful tool on your face

The human nose plays a crucial role in protecting the body from toxins by acting as an impressive first line of defence. It operates as a highly advanced filtration system, with its main mechanism relying on the presence of small hair-like structures known as cilia that line the nasal passages. Working in harmony with mucus production, these cilia effectively capture and remove harmful particles, thus safeguarding the respiratory and digestive systems from potential harm.

I used to mouth breathe at night and gasp for air during the day. Little did I know that the breath is such a powerful tool if we just divert it where it’s meant to go. Through the nose!

Negative effects of mouth breathing:

Dry Mouth: Mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth and dehydration, as the flow of air through the mouth can evaporate saliva more quickly. This dryness can contribute to oral health issues, including an increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

Dental and Facial Development: Chronic mouth breathing, especially in children, may affect dental and facial development. It can contribute to malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), changes in facial structure, and altered tongue posture.

Bad Breath: Dry mouth resulting from mouth breathing can lead to bad breath (halitosis) due to reduced saliva production. Saliva helps cleanse the mouth and neutralise acids produced by bacteria.

Reduced Nitric Oxide Production: Nitric oxide is produced in the nasal passages, and breathing through the nose facilitates its release. Nitric oxide has vasodilatory and antimicrobial effects. Chronic mouth breathing may lead to reduced nitric oxide production.

Impaired Oxygen Uptake: Nasal breathing optimises the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. Breathing through the mouth may disrupt this balance, potentially affecting oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide elimination.

Respiratory and Immune Health: Nasal breathing helps filter and humidify the air, contributing to respiratory and immune health. Mouth breathing may increase the risk of respiratory infections and allergies.

Snoring and Sleep Apnoea: Chronic mouth breathing, especially during sleep, may contribute to snoring and sleep apnoea. It can alter the position of the tongue and soft tissues in the throat, potentially leading to airway obstruction during sleep.

Fatigue and Sleep Quality: Mouth breathing during sleep may result in disrupted sleep patterns, potentially leading to fatigue and reduced overall sleep quality.

Breathing Pattern Irregularities: Mouth breathing can encourage shallow breathing patterns, contributing to imbalances in oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. This may affect respiratory efficiency.

Increased Stress Response: Breathing through the mouth may activate the sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” response), contributing to increased stress levels.

The Power Of Nature

The nasal passages have been ingeniously crafted to maximise this safeguarding procedure. The slender bends and curves of the nasal cavity amplify the filtration surface area, while the damp mucus lining heightens the ability to trap and eliminate airborne impurities.

Moreover, the nasal mucosa harbours immune cells capable of counteracting specific toxins. The optimal functioning of this defence mechanism relies on efficient nasal respiration and unobstructed airflow. By comprehending and valuing the intricate structure of the nose, we acquire a deeper understanding of its crucial function in reducing toxin infiltration and fostering general well-being.

Nitrous oxide, an essential neurotransmitter, is synthesised within the nasal passage through an intricate mechanism. Neurons discharge nitric oxide (NO), which subsequently stimulates the enzyme guanylate cyclase. Consequently, this enzyme initiates the synthesis of nitrous oxide, exerting its influence on diverse physiological processes such as vasodilation of blood vessels and neurotransmission.

Breathing through your nose offers several key benefits for overall health and well-being.

Advantages of Nose Breathing:

Filtration and Humidification: The nose acts as a natural air filter, trapping dust, allergens, and other particles. It also humidifies the air, ensuring that it is warm and moist before it reaches the lungs, which can be beneficial for respiratory health.

Nitric Oxide Production: The nasal passages produce nitric oxide, a gas with various physiological effects. Nitric oxide helps dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow, and it has antimicrobial properties that can aid in respiratory health.

Enhanced Oxygen Uptake: Breathing through the nose allows for slower and deeper breaths, which can enhance oxygen uptake. Nasal breathing also optimises the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body.

Promotion of Diaphragmatic Breathing: Nose breathing encourages diaphragmatic breathing, where the diaphragm, the primary muscle for respiration, is actively engaged. This type of breathing is more efficient and helps with the proper use of lung capacity.

Activation of the Diaphragmatic Reflex: Breathing through the nose stimulates the diaphragmatic reflex, which can have a calming effect on the nervous system. This can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Toning the tissues from throat to pelvis!

Improved Lung Function: Nasal breathing helps to optimise the distribution of airflow within the lungs, improving ventilation and lung function.

Enhanced Lung Volume: Breathing through the nose promotes a slower respiratory rate, allowing for more efficient use of lung volume. This can be particularly beneficial during rest and relaxation.

Promotion of Proper Tongue Posture: Nose breathing is associated with proper tongue posture, where the tongue rests against the roof of the mouth. This can have positive effects on dental and facial development.

Prevention of Dry Mouth: Breathing through the nose helps prevent dry mouth, as the nasal passages humidify the incoming air.

Activation of the Relaxation Response: Nasal breathing is linked to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the “rest and digest” system, which promotes relaxation and recovery.

It doesn’t need to be a “grind”

Habit Changing Secrets: Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of your detox journey! This week let’s shine a spotlight on your habits – both the uplifting habits and the ones that may not serve you. Why? Because awareness is the first step towards change. Here’s a simple exercise to kickstart this process:

Distinguish and write down your “good” and “bad” habits.

Good Habits:

Example 1: I walk to work.

Example 2: I take an evening stroll.

Example 3: I prioritise hydration and drink water first thing in the morning.

Bad Habits:

Example 1: After work, I treat myself with a glass of wine.

Example 2: I check my phone first thing in the morning.

Example 3: I sometimes get caught up in social media and scroll for too long.

These lists are powerful tools. By acknowledging your habits, both positive and not-so-positive, you’re setting the stage for meaningful change. Keep these lists handy; we’ll revisit them in the upcoming weeks and take action to transform them!

Let the awareness begin!

Actions for Change!

  1. Put post-it notes where you’ll see them in your workspace, car, bedroom, and kitchen reminding you to “BREATHE THROUGH NOSE”.
  2. Try mouth taping at night! This can sound frightening, I know. If this is a trauma trigger for you, please take it slow or seek professional help before introducing and with implementing this incredible tool. You just need some microporous tape. Taping the mouth at night prevents it from dropping open. (Get in contact if you want to know more, this is part of the initial practices of the Transform Program).
  3. Consciously bring awareness to mouth breathing whilst out walking, notice when you mouth breathe and mindfully practice bringing the breath through the nose. This connects activity and movement with breathing through the nose. And will not only enhance your walk in many ways, it will also begin to integrate nose breathing into all aspects of life.

Next Week: The gastrointestinal tract!
