Develop Perseverance.

Develop Perseverance.

Like many people, you may feel that you just need to push through blockages to take the actions necessary to change your life. My experience has been that there are no simple answers to working through resistance that creates genuine progress in life.

You can’t force change. But there are simple steps that can be taken.

Procrastination can be experienced as a blockage in the body—a general sense of unwillingness to carry out a certain action, or a sense of inability to move through inertia.

Some people persevere through the most incredible journeys and stories. You may know people or have heard of those who seem to thrive despite the odds.

How do they do that in the face of so much physical resistance?

You may find yourself, as I often did, wondering why or how this is possible for them. I would often ask myself, “Why am I not like that?” The truth is that you hold the potential to call on your innate inner strength of character and persevere.

Even if you feel weak or unskilled in some areas, your strength to change and move in the direction of your desire remains and is accessible to you.

It is important to note that by “perseverance,” I do not mean for you to negate your basic needs, create undue stress, or perpetuate chronic stress cycles. Rather, it’s about finding the available, sustainable, and achievable ways to continue moving in line with your heart—aware of your body and your true limits, not the make-believe limitations that may persist and keep you stuck.

Strength of character is created through taking the next action in a certain direction. By using the conscious mind to begin reprogramming the automatic patterns your subconscious creates, you do not succumb to the belief that you lack the potential to overcome inertia and mitigate the blockages that perpetuate the insidious sense of immovability.

It’s well known that we live much of our lives acting in accordance with automatic patterns and cycles. These patterns and cycles are developed and created when we’re very young, but they are not set in stone.

Much of your personality is very malleable once you know how to mold it into shape.

If you’re holding onto self-limiting beliefs, they can get in the way and defeat you before you even begin the journey toward a successful outcome. Defeat and triumph are two choices at the beginning of any pathway to achieving your goals.

Perseverance is built and created through new beliefs.

You can weather the storm of procrastination to feel freer.

You can weather the storm of procrastination and feel freer.

The blockages we feel in our bodies get in the way of our true selves. These blockages hinder our talents and innate abilities, preventing them from flourishing. If they don’t flourish, those abilities sit in your shadow, unrealised.

Unrealised innate talents sit in your shadow, awaiting action.

To begin to conquer failure, explore what success might feel like.

  • How does success look to you?
  • Imagine what it will be like for you to succeed at something you found difficult or were previously unable to achieve.
  • Imagine yourself moving past setbacks and into success.
  • What does that feel like in your body?
  • Maybe you feel strong, capable, upright, and bold?
  • Notice what success feels like to you. It will be unique in its embodiment.

If the word “success” makes you retract, cringe, or feel shameful, that’s also worth exploring. See if you can reframe this. If it’s not available to you yet, maybe replace the word success with something that feels more welcome in your system at this time, such as: accomplishment, achievement, abundance, contentment, or fulfillment.

How do you feel about success?

This is really a short meditation. Meditation is the practice of being still and allowing the thinking mind to move, but not to overcome you.

You may close your eyes and take some nice, deep breaths. We are here not to dwell on your perceived or lived setbacks, nor to focus on the blockages inside your mind, but to begin cultivating belief in yourself and trust in your abilities.

Imagine yourself moving past the blockage. See, feel, and sense yourself free from restraint. From this place, you can begin to visualise what you’re going to create. Return to this mini practice daily—it takes just a few moments. Each time, you are loosening the grip of perceived limitation and opening the way for movement toward your desire.

Are you ready for triumph? Ready to overcome the odds?

Let’s carry out a little bit of shadow work together.

You can build the strength of character to persevere and achieve your goals. The transformation you want in your life is within you. Sometimes defeat can feel wholly overwhelming. In states of defeat, overwhelm, or total inertia, it can be helpful to start with small things and then, over time, expand on those small successes.

Begin first by acknowledging what it is you want to do. It might simply be that you want to meditate every day. Maybe you want to incorporate cold showers because you know how good they are for you, or perhaps you wish to change the way you eat. Whatever your desire may be, you can begin to make it manifest as part of your reality.

You may be experiencing or saying self-limiting beliefs to yourself, such as:

  • “I’ve never been able to sit still.”
  • “My mind is too busy.”
  • “I hate the cold.”
  • “I can’t change what I eat.”

When you look at these self-limiting beliefs, you can see where perseverance and success are being crushed, preventing them from being nurtured and developed deeper into your being. I’m going to invite you to be as creative as you can and accept that there is no limit to your imagination.

Whatever you say to yourself can guide you towards or away from something.

You may feel some resistance to beginning this practice. That’s normal.

Try writing a few simple affirmations like:

  • “When I sit down and meditate every morning, my mind is clear for 20 minutes, and I feel a great peace afterward.”

You don’t even need to be meditating yet to start this affirmation. You’re just saying something to yourself that you want to become.

  • “I love cold showers and getting in the sea—it makes me feel refreshed, invigorated, and full of energy.”
  • “I love wholefoods, fruits, and vegetables. I enjoy putting music on in the kitchen and really love preparing food.”

The next phase of altering your perception of reality is to repeat these new beliefs to yourself. You might put them on post-it notes on your desk, your computer, in the kitchen, or stuck on a TV screen—anywhere in your line of vision. This way, you will notice when your self-limiting beliefs are arising and dominating your life.

You have the power to become a truer, more freer, version of yourself.

With your conscious mind, you choose to build the strength of character that will begin to repopulate your subconscious.
